Some Housebreaking Tips:

You should begin housebreaking your puppy as soon as you bring it home.

Once bad habits start they are harder to break. You must decide whether you are going to train your puppy to go indoors, outdoors or a combination of both, which is recommended as you don't need to worry about your puppy getting wet or soiling his coat if the weather is bad.

Immediately upon arrival, introduce the special place where you have chosen for your puppy to do his business indoors. Place wee wee pads on top of newspaper on the floor. If you have carpeted rooms it would be wise to confine the puppy to just areas without carpeting. Do not give a tiny puppy full run of your house. It is dangerous and will make it hard to house train a puppy that is running all over doing as it pleases. Young puppies relieve themselves frequently, so if you see him franticly circling and sniffing the ground that is a sign he needs to go potty! Give your puppy lots of praise when he does a good potty. For outdoor training, puppy should be taken outdoors every one to three hours. Older pups can wait longer between outings. You will need to choose an appropriate area outside. Always stay with your puppy so you can praise him when he completes his business in the appropriate spot. By giving praise and or a food reward immediately after your puppy finishes you can encourage him to potty in a desired area. Odor left from previous visits to that area will mark it as the place to go potty for him. Be sure to pick-up any solid waste immediately. These are the times you should always expect your puppy to potty: First thing in the Morning: After Naps: After Meals: After Play or Training: Before being put to Bed: The most important thing to remember in training is be consistent! Always use the same words like "Go Potty" or "Get Busy" your puppy will learn quickly if you do this.

Think of it this way a human baby isn't ready for potty training until it is two years old. We are asking an awful lot of our three month old puppies to be housetrained. Be patient and consistent you will get the job done!

Kennel Training Tips:

It is a good idea to have your puppy sleep in a kennel at night. Buy a kennel that is big enough for a full grown dog to sleep in and be comfortable. Put the kennel on a table right next to your bed, your night stand is a perfect place. Your puppy will sleep better if he can see you and is close to you. Do not put food or water in kennel at night. Do not let your puppy eat right before going to bed. A good rule of thumb is NO food within two hours of going to bed. Just put an absorbent blanket or towel in kennel at night. Put your puppy in his kennel at the same time you go to sleep, be sure he has gone potty before kenneling him. He may pitch a fit at first but most puppies give up fast and go to sleep. If he wakes up 3 or 4 hours later that means he needs to potty, so pick him up and carry him to his place you want him to potty at. After he relieves himself Praise him. Then put him back in his kennel until morning or when you are starting your day. You want to put your puppy on your schedule as soon as you get him. Do not use a Kennel as a punishment. His kennel should be only for nighttime. During the day if you need to leave him alone for awhile try putting a baby gate in the doorway of a laundry room or bathroom to confine him. A snuggle bed, food, water, wee wee pads and toys will keep him comfortable until you return. I mentioned Snuggle Bed above this is a round bed with high sides made out of material and washable. I have also found leaving a television. on or a radio playing  may comfort your puppy while you are gone. Just hearing a human voice is comforting to a puppy. Animal planet is my dogs favorite channel! I also recommend having your Shih Tzu drink out of a water bottle, this keeps his face dry and the water stays clean. The best set up I have ever seen is at http://www.pawscreations.com they make several different styles of water bottle stands and feeding stations to choose from.
